Three senior figures of the United National Party (UNP), including former powerful ministers who held key positions in the previous government, are reportedly preparing to contest the upcoming Provincial Council Elections under the banner of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) as Chief Ministerial candidates.

According to political sources, the decision has been taken in opposition to what they describe as an internal conspiracy by a small faction within the UNP against any political alliance between the SJB and the UNP. The three politicians have already informed Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa of their political stance.

Meanwhile, Ven. Ambanwela Gnanaloka Thero, Chief Incumbent of the Sedawatta Purana Viharaya in Weheragoda, Colombo, and a close personal associate of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, told “Lanka News Week” that the position of Ranil Wickremesinghe, along with Vajira Abeywardena and Sagala Ratnayaka, is that the UNP should move forward politically with Namal Rajapaksa and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), rather than with Sajith Premadasa and the SJB.

These growing ideological clashes, conflicting political positions, and alleged conspiracies have further fragmented the UNP, leaving the party politically weakened and its supporters increasingly disillusioned.

At the same time, eleven Members of Parliament from the SJB have reportedly informed Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa that they are prepared to resign from Parliament and contest as Chief Ministerial candidates if the government proceeds with calling the long-delayed Provincial Council Elections.
